The main aim of this project is to examine what drives people to use Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) and Complementary and Alternative Psychotherapies (CAP), and whether they use them as part of their overall health care strategy or due to structural barriers that hinder access to standard evidence-based healthcare. Both CAM and CAP refer to practices that lack sufficient evidence and are often considered questionable, potentially posing serious risks to health and overall quality of life. Despite this, CAM and CAP are increasingly popular. Therefore, it is crucial to better understand why people are inclined to prefer these alternatives. The project aims to explore the role of psychosocial factors, such as medical conspiracy beliefs, descriptive and injunctive norms, and perceived social support, alongside structural factors, including barriers to accessing conventional healthcare, shortages of professionals, long wait times, client refusals, and unmet healthcare needs.
